Equality
Fifth grade students at the Brown School read A Taste of Colored Water by Matt Faulkner and then talked about segregation and equality. After our brief discussion on equality, students were asked to answer the following question: “How is equality promoted in our schools and in our classrooms?”

People get the same equality in the Brown School. They treat each other the same if they are colored or white. They are not mean to each other. They don’t say oh you can’t play with us because you are colored. The teacher won’t give a kid who is colored a bad grade when the kid gets a good grade just because that kid is colored. This is how people in the Brown School treat people equally.

Equality is a law that is strict, but at one time it was garbage to white people. Black people were slaves. Then they were segregated. The worst part of segregation was that white schools had a better education than black ones. Then people like the Little Rock Nine and Ruby Bridges stepped up and made a change. These stupid things like segregation and slavery lead to war. Now there is no segregation or slavery. In my school there is only equality. The whites and blacks have the same education. They get the same books. They even get the same tests. Brave people who made people against slavery and segregation made the U.S. what it is today at work, at schools, and in homes.

The Brown school spreads equlity in many ways. We also use the golden rule. The golden rule is when you treat someone the way you want to be treated. In our classroom, we have people from different races but we are all friends. We alll treat each other with respect and dignity. Every single classroom has people from different races but they are all equal.

Equality is promoted in our class a lot. Everyone is treated the same and get the requirements. No one gets less work than others. No individual gets special attention. The skin color does not matter in our class or even in the entire Brown School. There is equality in the classroom. Everyone gets along well and treats them with respect. The class can work together. Although there are arguments, all students are equal, no matter what color you are.

The Brown School students treat each other with respect. They treat them with respect no matter what race they are. We are all united and are friends. Anyone from anywhere treats each other like a brother or sister. The Brown bases the golden rule around every classroom. We can let every student use the stall and water fountain. We do let people have after school help. We have tutors that help every race of a person.

In the Brown School, equality is promoted by all of the people in the same classroom with the same teacher. Our teachers punish us and reward us equally. Every child uses the same water fountain. You are not denied the privilege of going on a field trip because of your color. Lastly, students can go to the same specialists.

Students in the Brown School get equality by the teachers helping any student if they don’t understand something. The teachers help students as best they can, and they try to help students if they get all A’s and only one B’ on social studies. The teachers will help them with that subject until they get all A’s. Also the teachers will help you with any problem you have. They will talk to you and the person that you’re having problems with until you don’t have the problem any more. That is how our school is equal and harmonious.

Equality is promoted to the Brown School because everyone is treated the same. The Brown School has blacks and whites. There isn’t one classroom just for blacks, everyone is in the same classroom. Teachers are nice to all their students, not just the ones who are white. Finally, all the students like each other. Nobody will leave one student alone at recess just because they are colored. This is how the Benjamin Brown School promotes equality to all their students.

Equality is promoted in the Brown School because the Brown School treats people equally, no matter what race they are. In chorus, Mrs.Rivera doesn’t give somone a broken binder just because they are black and everyone else is white. In The Little Rock Nine, Ernest Green’s teacher gives him a bad grade when he looks at the name, just because Ernest is black. Ms. Lynch doesn’t do that. All of the students treat each other the same and they don’t care about what color other people are.

Equality is very important. Back in the past and still to this day now there was segregation between blacks and whites. Whites would bomb black’s houses and hang them until they choked to death. Then in some places blacks were slaves, some were indentured servants who worked to pay off money they owed and some were slaves who worked their whole lives. If a servant gave birth to a baby then the baby became a servant the minute they were born. In the Brown school, we have equality so everybody is treated the same exact way. Blacks and whites all have good books and were are all learning the same things. In the Brown school we all can drink from the same water fountain. There aren’t any water fountains that are marked Colored or Whites Only. In the Brown School we all are nice to each other and we are totally intergrated. If Martin Luther King Jr. or Rosa Parks or the Little Rock Nine or Harriet Tubman or Ruby Bridges didn’t do what they did then we wouldn’t be intergrated like we are today.

This how everyone in the Brown School gets equality. Well back when the Little Rock Nine and Ruby Bridges were alive, white people they were very mean to the black people. Now we all treat each other fairly and equally in the Benjamin G. Brown elementary school. All of the students are nice to each other. All of the teachers treat the children fairly. All people in the Brown School know each other and that is why equality lives at the Brown School!

In the past, people were killed, bombed, strangled, and more just because of their skin color. They were threatened so often, that they might have had to move to other countries. White people dind’t care about laws or integration, they wanted segregation. White’s treated blacks like they were dingy, filthy, bags of trash. The Brown School gives everyone the equality that they have the right to. Many black people come here, and they all get a fair education. The Brown School doesn’t use two separate fountains, just one for equal rights. The Brown School offers a free education to everyone, not just white people. We don’t have to form secret societies to help black people. We don’t need presidential protection to walk inside like Ruby Bridges. We don’t need armed protection like the Little Rock Nine. We don’t need to make a big deal of anything. We don’t need armed forces surrounding the building at all times. We have an equal, and positive school, every classroom is a happy classroom. We don’t have to make history like Rosa Parks, or Martin Luther King Jr. We have a school full of equality.

We have equalities in our class because we all have the same learning opportunites and we all use new materials. There are no restictions on the water fountains or bathrooms. We all are given equal attention when we need help understanding something. This is why we are all equal.

I think that everybody in our school is not treated the same because some are made fun of. Some are not made fun of. Also sometimes when a student does something wrong they get yelled at from the teacher. But when an other student does the same thing they dont get yelled at the teacher wouldnt care. It is like the teachers like certain student there class.

In my school, all kinds of kids are treated with respect and are treated equally. Everyone is nice to each other because no one cares about the color of your skin but about what kind of person you are.Different people from different countries are all the same from the inside and today nobody is treated differently. In this school people areall united. Also people come together in E.S.C.S.

In our class equality is a big thing to everybody, because some people might say you cant play just because you are a girl or a boy or, even if you are cool or not. You might get excluded because of those things. BUt that was only in the past but now we all respect eachother for what we are. This makes it a whole lot more fun and a better school or classroom.
